In 1996, the United
States Council of Catholic Bishops approved and published Sons and
Daughters of the Light, a national ministerial plan for young
adults. This document outlined four basic goals and objectives for the
Church as we reach out to young people:
- Connecting young adults with
Jesus Christ.
- Connecting young adults with
the Church.
- Connecting young adults with
the Mission of the Church.
- Connecting young adults with
a peer community.
[The Archdiocese of Detroit
defines young adults as "married, single or single-again person, in
their late teens, twenties, and thirties."]
The release by the Archdiocese
of Detroit, "Campus & Young Adult Ministry: A New Model"
called for each geographical area to collaborate in providing both
campus ministry and young adult ministry to its region. According to the
plan, though campus ministry and young adult ministry each have their
own distinct purpose, they are inseparably linked in their goals and
sharing of support.
Genesis Ministries is Oakland
County's response to the "New Model." Combining the resources
of the 5 vicariates that exist in Oakland County (Pontiac Area,
Bloomfield-Birmingham-Troy, Lakes, Southeast Oakland and
Farmington-Southfield) and expanding pre-existing ministries and
programs, Genesis exemplifies the goals set forth in the "New
Model. Under the guidance of a full time Campus and full time Young
Adult minister, Genesis seeks to provide a connection for young adult
Catholics to the four areas listed above.
By combining the talents, gifts
and charisms of various individuals and groups in the area, Genesis
provides formation and a solid framework to reach out to young adult
Catholics in a comprehensive way. Through
the efforts of many peer and parish organizations, young adults in
Oakland County have the opportunity to gather together to worship,
serve, learn, socialize and deepen their Catholic faith.
